| Children are a gift |
|
In this rather crazy season of shopping and wrapping gifts for our friends and loved ones it probably seems rather odd to be putting our children in the ‘gift’ category, but think about it. A gift is something special, something of ‘value’ given with love. Until it is unwrapped, the contents remain a mystery. Just as Mrs. Gump said to Forrest, “Life’s a box of chocolates, Forrest. You don’t know what you are going to get.” Our children are a fantastic gift of unknown quantity. God values children highly. We (children) are made in the image of God, and He would not have made us to look like Him if He did not intend for us to be His children. Jesus also made it quite clear that children have as much value as adults in the Kingdom of God. He said we need the simple faith of a little child, and not the mind of a scholar to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. When Peter tried to stop the little children from being brought to Him for prayer, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matt 19v14) I wonder if in the busyness of our lives we lose sight of the value God places on our children? Perhaps, because we spend much of their early lives training them, feeding them, soothing them and loving them, we assume that we are creating their value. That is not so. Our responsibility as parents is to identify and develop the skills and abilities that are inherently programmed in our kids from birth, to the point where they reach their full potential. The value was there all the time. It is up to us to draw it out and direct it to its greatest purpose. Our children are our legacy. What they learn from us they pass on to their children and on it goes through generations. Have you ever checked out ‘Ancestry.com’? It is absolutely fascinating finding out where your family originated. What incredible value each link in the family has to build onto the next. We were not created in one big explosion. Our Father carefully and lovingly created every cell. God said we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Our bodies are a computer inside. Everything is in balance and when something goes sideways, the body automatically compensates to re-establish equilibrium. God’s ultimate gift to us was the life of His Son who died to give us everlasting life. His ultimate love for us tells us of the value He places on each of His children. God himself loved us so much that He sent Jesus to be born of a woman on earth (a miraculous birth) to bring about salvation since His people would not listen to what He had been saying through the prophets. He knew the value of a child through this very demonstration. He has given us the gift of our children. Let’s remember their true valuethis Christmas season and the great responsibility He has placed on us to raise them to have relationship with Him and to be amazing citizens of this country.
