This topic looks at the many ways that we indulge our children. We usually think of indulgence as giving kids ‘stuff’ but indulgence also includes giving in to kids, and sticking up for them even when they are wrong. It means not disciplining them when they need it, making excuses for negative behaviors by saying such things as ‘Boys will be boys’, or ‘Isn’t that cute?’ It includes allowing kids with special needs or gifts to be ‘different’ and not have to fit in with social activities. This is not preparing a child for society at a later age. Indulgence means not teaching kids to do chores or train them to manage a house and children when they are older. This topic teaches parents that indulgence creates selfishness and a lack of awareness for others and shows parents how to create a sense of family responsibility in children.
