Parents are parents and kids are kids. The role of parent is to develop a child to becoming a positive, contributing member of society. Kids need love as well as discipline. Kids need to learn how to comply with the law and with authority figures. Parents are to be the authority figures in the family. Kids do not reach the age of reason until they reach 10-11 years of age. Parents can’t afford to treat their children as pals, until they have reached later teens. Kids often get used as sounding boards for a single parent who has no adult friend to discuss adult conversations. This is not fair to a child who may feel guilty because they cannot offer the advice the adult needs to solve problems. This topic explores a) the authoritative boundaries that parents need to keep, and also suggestions as to how to keep parent/child conversations age appropriate.
