Peer pressure starts seriously at around nine years of age when kids begin to become aware of who they are and who they want to be. During adolescence peer pressure often has a greater influence than a parent. It stems from a desire to be liked, to be popular, to fit in, be the same as, or be one of the crowd. Pressure denotes force. It is a mighty force for a child to stand against when so many of their peers are influenced by it. Kids are constantly being bombarded with media advertising, telling them what is ‘cool to wear’, ‘cool to listen to’, ‘cool to say’, ‘cool to watch’, and ‘cool to do’. This topic deals with how to preserve family values against what is being dictated from society. It answers the hard questions about priorities and choosing battles.
