Good choices don’t just happen. Kids can learn to make good choices even when they are toddlers. They realize that some actions make parents happy and some actions don’t. It pays to make parents happy! Obedience is a choice. A child learns what will happen if they do not do as they are told. Kids think that parents only discipline and this is sometimes true. However, kids make the choice as to whether to do as they are told or not. They know the consequences and, therefore, their choice is what creates praise or disciplinary action. Choices don’t always relate to obedience. We make decisions all through our lives, and a sure way to learn to make good choices is to be given responsibility at an early age to be able to practice the cause and effects of the choices we make. We should be allowed to make mistakes as long as we learn from them. This topic discusses ways to help kids safely practice making choices. It also helps parents deal with the poor decisions kids make, and teaches how to turn these into learning experiences.
