Teaching kids to do the ‘right thing’ is a very important value in today’s corrupt society. Ethics deals with honesty and morality. Parents who say, “Just don’t get caught”, are not ethically mature, and their kids will likely follow their example. Ethical maturity has a number of phases – from, ‘I better not do this or Mom will punish me’, through to, ‘I want to do this because it is the right thing for me and for others’. In other words, maturity is reached when a person chooses to make the right choice, not for fear of getting caught, but because in their own mind they know it is the right thing to do. Many adults are stuck in the earlier phases. It is our responsibility, as parents, to ensure we have reached ethical maturity so we can teach our children the same value. This topic provides ways to reach ethical maturity.
