Single parent families are much more prevalent in our society today than ever before. More teenage girls choose to keep their children. Relationships break up and one parent has predominant custody of the children. Single parenting can be long or short term. Many parents are deployed overseas for periods of time with the armed forces. Some work is so specialized or hard to find, that a parent may feel forced to work elsewhere during the week and come home for the weekends. Some parents work 70-90 hour weeks, so the kids think they have a single parent family! For whatever reason, one parent is not home, the other parent becomes Mom and Dad, and this is a very stressful and difficult task. It is difficult to be consistent, to not give in for the sake of peace, to be vigilant in watching what kids are doing and viewing, and have the time to give each child the personal attention they need. This topic talks about the importance of strong family values – which take the stress out of discipline, while at the same time providing a clear set of expectations for each family member. It discusses ways of obtaining help, and also discusses the symptoms and responses to particular single parent issues.
