The home school or Sunday school room differs somewhat from the standard classroom environment when it comes to behavioral management. A school has specific rules and consequences for negative behavior. There is a standard of behavior that is expected, and there is strong authority to enforce it – for the sake of learning. Kids can be suspended out of the classroom or removed from the school if their behavior warrants it. If their behavior becomes violent they can be arrested and sent to Juvenile Hall. In Sunday school, however, there is usually no written expectation for child behavior. If a toddler gets upset, parents can be summoned to collect the child, but there is no official way of dealing with a disruptive child in this ‘voluntary’ setting. Some parents think of Sunday school as a baby-sitting service, but most hope their child will learn valuable lessons through attendance. Every child/parent has a right to expect an orderly Sunday school classroom in which their child can learn. In the home-school classroom, there may not be any written expectations, although if the family has expectations and effective discipline, then management will be easier. If there is ineffective discipline, then children may disrupt the classroom and learning is compromised. If there is stress in the home, or there has just been a disagreement between the children and the home-school parent/teacher, this may well affect the classroom atmosphere. We have the tools to ensure that an orderly classroom is maintained. |
